 A Continuous Journey

Christina Velidou

                     My parents were farmers in a small village in northwest Greece, and they raised me with the love every person on Earth should have.  Our house held an extended family of thirteen:  my parents and my twin brothers, our grandparents, my father’s youngest sister, and an uncle with his wife and children.

                     What an experience!  I learned to live in a community within my own house.  We were taught to respect each other,  respect the rules,  and make sure we weren’t in the way of the grown-ups when they discussed serious matters and made decisions for us all. Even then,  I was always there to listen,  as I found it fascinating to hear different opinions and think about the best outcome for all.

                     My twin Brothers, John and Sakis,  are five years older than me, and Sakis  was born deaf.  When he was young, my parents made the hard decision to send him away to a special school to learn to speak and communicate.  On school holidays he came home, and those days when my family was united, were my favourite. The  summer I was 9, Sakis came home to stay for good.

                     We were at the basketball court playing with other kids from the neighborhood when something happened that changed my life.
